this is afternoon. the string of twitter messages about the budget negotiations in washington. the white house announcing in advance today that the president himself would be answering people's questions about the negotiations in washington. he would be answering them directly on twitter starting at 2:00 p.m. eastern. it is kind of awesome that regular people can ask direct questions from the leader of the free world. it's like a town hall but you don't have to go to new hampshire in the winter to do it. but doing this shows the unique risks of totally unmediated communication methods for high profile people. like there was this exchange this afternoon which does make sense and it is on message, even if at first it doesn't seem that way. the person who's writing the president here is called, don't be a prat. that's their name on twitter. here's the president answering the question. @barackobama. as a recent college grad without a job, these cuts wouldn't help me, would they? here's the president's response. cuts without revenue e equal reductions in student loans. also work study credits expir

here in washington, d.c. we're not so sure we're getting out of town yet. >> they should be plans you can cancel if case you have to go right back to work. let me ask a question. jessica says pressure is a great motivator. talk about pressure last night on speaker boehner, couldn't get enough support from his own party for his plan. what does that mean for any kind of bipartisan plan they might be working out? >> it really does illustrate how difficult it is going to be for democrats to even achieve what the president laid out tonight, a scaled down version. the speaker himself said a couple of times today that he believes that the reason why he didn't get even the majority of the caucus to support him was because of a lot of difficulty voting to raise taxes, voting for anything that can be perceived as a tax increase. well, what the president is talking about even scaled down version is definitely raising taxes. and raising taxes on people making $250,000 or more, at least households, so that's going to be difficult to do. that's why reality check here, talking to democrats and repub

washington. it's thursday, december 13, 2012. this is "the daily rundown," i'm chuck todd. the only reason we can't saturday fiscal cliff negotiations have fallen apart is that the two sides are still talking. but things are bad, make no mistake. and neither side is optimistic that anything can get done at all. with congress and the president careening to the edge of the cliff, the public is ignoring party lines and demanding an end to this mess. 70% of democrats, 59% of republicans want their own party's leaders to come to an agreement, even if it means not sticking to long-held positions on taxes and entitlements and yet despite those demand, the country is evenly divided on whether they think a consensus can be worked out here in washington, whether they believe obama and boehner can strike a deal. interestingly folks that are paying more attention to the fiscal cliff story are more pessimistic. it's the folks paying less attention that are more optimistic. judging by what we're hearing from negotiators, the public clearly knows something is up in the bad way. >> i remain the most optimist

that reflects conservative ideas. match that with the researchers in washington that to the policy work for heritage. connell: i think a lot of people will hear or read about this today and think about the conversation we have been having about the future of the republican party. does the tea party still have, you know, lindsey graham just put a statement out saying he is very disappointed that demint is leaving. the conservative movement lost a strong voice. he will do a great job at heritage. is this part of that story? >> i think senator demint believes that the republican message going into the election was a strong one. it just simply was not well articulated. i agree with senator demint. i do not believe that the republican party has to transform its position and become more moderate. take an idea like economic growth. the difference between 2% growth and 3.5% is a different like night and day. senator demint told me he started his career as a market researcher and advertising. he knows how to communicate with people. he became very frustrated sitting in the senate failing to do a
